Post AOG 2016 – Where Are The Growth & Job Opportunities In Australia Oil & Gas ?

AustraliamapDespite the current downturn in oil prices and major LNG projects starting to come to the end of their construction phases (such as Gorgon in WA), with hiring slowing down, industry experts still remain positive broadly prospects about Australia’s energy sector as the industry transitions from a period of high investment to one of production growth (1);

1. LNG Mega-Projects Hiring  2016-2019

By 2019-20, all 7 mega-LNG projects are forecast to begin operation and there will be a total of 86.6m tonnes of LNG production capacity in place, with a projected combined export volume of just over 76m tonnes.  A recent study by Energy Skills Queensland forecast that demand for workers in upstream Coal Seam Gas (CSG) would not peak until 2024 (based on a scenario of 45,000 wells and six LNG trains). The need for these different roles will change over the duration of the project. Since well servicing requires the most manpower following the drilling and gas field development stages, demand for these roles is expected to rise in the next one to two years. This phase of the LNG projects brings with it new workforce challenges. According to a recent study by the Australian Workplace and Productivity Agency, Australia will require approximately 3,000 LNG process operators over the next two to three years,  although current estimates suggest there are only between 200 -300 available (2)

 2. Australasian Oil & Gas Hiring / Salaries 2014-2016

Looking at the next six to 12 months, 22% of oil and gas employers globally believe skills shortages will still be their second main concern (behind economic stability). This could be an early sign of employers preparing to start hiring in the latter half of the year, should the oil price start to rise again.(3)

Australiaoil&gassalariesOver the last year  the average global oil & gas salary decreased by 1.4% – global local oil & gas talent average of US$68,400 and an expat oil & gas talent average of US$98,200. Average Australasian oil & gas salaries were higher than both the global averages and Western European oil & gas salaries (4)

Australiaoil&gassalaries2015v4The average contractor day rate globally in 2015 was US$525. In Australasia contractor day rates  still held above European contractor day rates (5)

3. Great Australian Bight  – Latest Developments – Jobs For The Future  ?

GreatABightAn Australian Senate committee is currently considering BP’s proposal for 4  exploration wells in the Great Australian Bight and pending approval, drilling of the first two wells could begin late in 2016.  Alongside BP, Rio Tinto and Chevron are also applying for exploratory licenses –  oil and gas industry body APPEA noted: “The economic benefits are potentially enormous. While it is very early days, success in the Great Australian Bight would attract investment to South Australia and see significant local job creation.” (6)

4. Victoria Pipeline – Jobs Growth

Work has begun on a $400m pipeline in Victoria to join Esso Australia’s Longford and Long Island Point processing and storage facilities to replace an existing pipeline which has transported crude oil and natural gas condensate between the plants since 1969. It will take two years to build and the project is expected to generate 500 jobs at its peak. 5.New Centre To Boost Energy Sector  – National Energy Resources Australia (NERA)

centreWith concerns still lingering that the resources sector in Australia could still be vulnerable to a slowdown in demand, the Australian government has announced steps to boost the sector. A new Growth Centre has been established by the Australian Government to drive innovation, competitiveness and productivity these sectors to be known as the National Energy Resources Australia (NERA). The Australian Government is investing $15.4m over 4 years in the growth centre which will focus on harnessing the sector’s existing competitive strengths, embracing innovation and putting research to work, ultimately improving productivity to ensure Australia remains globally competitive.
